The Clarity Multi-Gas Module expands the capabilities of the Node-S, enabling real-time measurement of CO, O₃, NO₂, NO, and NOx — five key pollutants that impact air quality and public health. Whether monitoring urban pollution, industrial emissions, or transportation corridors, this compact, all-in-one sensor provides high-quality data without the complexity of multiple instruments.

Designed for effortless deployment, the Multi-Gas Module features a weatherproof, UV-resistant enclosure and modular mounting for quick installation on both vertical and horizontal poles. With Clarity’s plug-and-play Add-On Module design, the Multi-Gas Module leverages the solar-powered operation and built-in cellular connectivity of the Node-S — even when paired with the Wind Module.

Multi-Gas Module use cases

CO and wildfires

  • CO is a by-product of combustion, emitted by both wildfires and urban sources
  • Wildfires produce significantly more PM2.5 per unit of CO than urban sources
  • The PM2.5-to-CO ratio helps distinguish wildfire smoke from urban pollution.

NOₓ and traffic

  • High NO and NO₂ levels identify traffic-related pollution hotspots
  • A higher NO-to-NO₂ ratio indicates fresh emissions near the source, while a lower ratio suggests chemical transformation as the air moves further away.

O₃ non-attainment and smog formation

  • Quantify diurnal pattern of NOx (morning, evening peaks) and O3 (afternoon peak)
  • Elevated NOₓ and O₃ together signal strong photochemical activity and smog formation.

The Clarity Ozone Module is based on best-in-class technology from 2B Technologies, and provides accurate measurements of ozone in air over a wide dynamic range extending from a few parts-per-billion by volume (ppb) to an upper limit of 100 parts-per-million (ppm) based on the well-established technique of absorption of ultraviolet light at 254 nm.

The Ozone Module integrates seamlessly into Clarity networks with an ozone monitoring technology has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a modification of Federal Equivalent Method (FEM): EQOA-0914-218. The Ozone Module is well suited for use by states and other monitoring agencies under 40 CFR Part 58, Ambient Air Quality Surveillance, for monitoring for compliance with the Clean Air Act.

The Black Carbon Module is a real-time 5-wavelength UV-IR Black Carbon monitor.

Designed to be installed outdoors on street poles and along fence lines, it also features an accelerometer, altimeter/barometer, and sensors for relative humidity and temperature. The spectrum measurement provides insight into the composition of light absorbing carbonaceous particles and helps to distinguish among the different optical signatures of various combustion sources such as diesel, woodsmoke, biomass and tobacco.
